A bold shift toward a New Southern Nevada Water Pipeline has passed in the U.S. House, signaling a major move on regional water security. The approval came through a voice vote on the Sloan Canyon Conservation and Lateral Pipeline Act, paving the way for a tunnel that would run beneath the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area as part of a larger water-tunnel initiative.
The measure would empower the Southern Nevada Water Authority to construct a segment of the system by tunneling under the Sloan Canyon NCA, a step supporters say will boost water reliability for the metropolitan area and help buffer the region against outages and supply disruptions.
In addition to the pipeline provisions, the legislation expands the Sloan Canyon Conservation Area by an extra 9,290 acres, aimed at further safeguarding the surrounding desert landscapes and their ecosystems.
U.S. Representative Dina Titus, a Democrat from Nevada, emphasized that Southern Nevada faces climate-related stresses with higher temperatures and shrinking water resources. She described the Horizon Lateral project as a critical balance between meeting urgent water needs and protecting environmental and community interests.
On the Senate side, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, also a Democrat from Nevada, introduced companion legislation. She indicated she would press to secure Senate passage and move the measure toward delivery to the White House for the President’s signature.
