In the ongoing battle against environmental degradation, even the smallest of household items can have a significant impact. Take supermarket cling wrap, foil, and sandwich bags, for instance. While we know these items are an environmental nightmare, they are also the unsung heroes keeping our chaotic kitchens from collapsing. So, which brands give you the best bang for your buck? Consumer group Canstar has compared our biggest brands of cling wrap, foil, and sandwich bags to see if the budget brands stack up to the pricier ones. Spoiler alert: Some of the budget brands do stack up, but they haven't taken out the top spot. That crown goes to Hercules, which has received the highest overall rating across five categories by 2,435 Australians who were asked about their favorite brands over the past six months. Hercules earned five stars for overall satisfaction, effectiveness, and variety and range, and four stars for value for money and packaging. In second place is a much more affordable brand, Aldi's Goliath, also earning five stars for overall satisfaction, value for money and packaging, and four stars for effectiveness and variety and range, at half the price of Hercules. However, the Goliath brand is currently listed as 'out of stock' on Aldi's website. So, I asked Aldi and was told that their Goliath brand and their Power Force brand are now one and the same. Power Force officially appears later in the list. Glad, Australia's number one food wrap brand, has landed in third place on the list, with four stars in every category except value for money, where it earned just two stars. Ziploc placed fourth on the list, losing the most points for packaging and value for money. Multix is in fifth place, with four stars in all categories except value for money where it earned just three. Aldi's Power Force brand, which is in stock, landed in sixth spot, followed by Woolworths' home brand in seventh place, followed by Armada in eighth spot, and then Coles in ninth place. Packaging, for this rating, meant ease of use, and this is a real sticking point when it comes to cling wrap brands. The easiest to use cling wrap brands, according to the survey, is Aldi's Goliath, with five out of five stars, however, as previously mentioned, it appears to be out of stock. Hercules, Glad, Multix, and Aldi Power Force, all scored highly when it came to ease of use, with four out of five stars. Woolworths, Armada, and Coles, weren't as easy to use, according to those surveyed. Foil is the most environmentally friendly out of these three products and can be placed in the recycling bin if all food refuse has been wiped off. Cling wrap goes in the general waste bin, or can be dropped off at 'soft plastic' collection points at your local supermarket along with your bread bags and the like. Some people reuse plastic sandwich bags, either wiping them down or washing them out and turning them inside out to dry. Or, you can purchase products made from recycled material, or that are marked as 'compostable', although these do tend to be more expensive than their less environmentally friendly counterparts. Canstar's research found one-third (33 per cent) of shoppers will always purchase the same brand of food wrap, with just under one-quarter (23 per cent) opting for whichever is cheapest, and 39 per cent stocking up when products are on special. Twenty-six per cent will reuse sandwich bags multiple times before throwing them away, and only 7 per cent will choose biodegradable food wrap. Personally, I think this highlights a deeper issue with our relationship with convenience. While we may be making small steps towards sustainability, such as opting for reusable bags or buying products made from recycled materials, we still have a long way to go. What makes this particularly fascinating is the contrast between our intentions and our actions. On one hand, we are becoming more environmentally conscious, but on the other, we are still relying heavily on single-use plastics. This raises a deeper question: Are we truly committed to making a difference, or are we just paying lip service to the cause? In my opinion, the fact that only 7 per cent of shoppers choose biodegradable food wrap is a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done. We need to move beyond small gestures and towards more meaningful actions, such as investing in innovative solutions or advocating for policy changes that promote sustainability. From my perspective, the survey results also point to the importance of education and awareness. We need to better understand the environmental impact of our choices and the alternatives available to us. This could involve providing more information about recycling and composting, or promoting the benefits of reusable products. One thing that immediately stands out is the need for more transparency in the market. We need to know more about the environmental credentials of the products we buy, and we need to be able to make informed choices. What many people don't realize is that the market is currently lacking in this area. While some companies are making efforts to be more sustainable, others are not, and it can be difficult for consumers to know which ones to trust. If you take a step back and think about it, this is a significant issue. We need to create a market that incentivizes companies to be more environmentally friendly, and we need to hold them accountable for their actions. In conclusion, while the survey results provide some insight into consumer behavior, they also highlight the need for more meaningful action towards sustainability. We need to move beyond small gestures and towards more innovative solutions, and we need to advocate for policy changes that promote a greener future. Personally, I believe that the key to making a difference lies in our ability to educate and empower ourselves and others. By doing so, we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come.
