A shocking incident unfolded during a Hershey Bears game, capturing widespread attention online. On January 10, during the intermission between the Hershey Bears and the Cleveland Monsters, young players from the Youth (Mites) team, consisting of children aged 8 and under, engaged in what many observers initially interpreted as a premeditated brawl on the ice.
As videos of this chaotic scene began to spread like wildfire across social media platforms, they caught the eye of major news organizations, including The New York Times, amplifying the spectacle's reach. In response to the uproar, officials from the Central Penn Panthers hockey club, which oversees the youth team, took swift action by launching an investigation into the events that transpired.
On Friday, the club released a statement clarifying their findings. They emphasized that neither the coaches nor the organization had orchestrated the fight. The statement explained that the young players share a close bond akin to that of a "band of brothers," and were under the impression from the host organization that they needed to provide entertainment during the intermission. Unfortunately, this led to a serious misunderstanding among the children, who interpreted the situation as an opportunity for a performance.
"Their seven- and eight-year-old minds unfortunately interpreted the moment as ‘show time’,” the statement noted. This unexpected outcome caught everyone off guard, including the host organization, parents, coaches, and fans present at the game.
The club's president, Will Younger, and owner, Ray Ferry, detailed that a thorough investigation took place, which involved analyzing game footage and interviewing involved parties. They stated decisively, "Based on this review, we state clearly and unequivocally that this incident was not planned, staged, encouraged, or directed by our coaches or by the Central Penn Panthers organization." Any claims to the contrary were labeled as unfounded and misleading.
According to reports, the altercation began after one player was struck, escalating quickly into a flurry of punches and physical confrontations. Some players attempted to de-escalate the situation, actions that were unfortunately not captured in the widely circulated social media clips but could be observed in the full broadcast of the event.
In light of calls for disciplinary measures against the coaching staff, the club stressed that the coaches acted appropriately. They had been instructed to refrain from stepping onto the ice without proper safety gear, and that officials would be present to oversee the scrimmage. However, when it became apparent that the officials were not intervening to stop the fight, one of the coaches felt compelled to step onto the ice to ensure player safety.
"When it became clear that intervention was not occurring, our head coach did take action — stepping onto the ice in his shoes and moving toward the players despite being far from them and without proper equipment,” the statement explained. “We are proud of his judgment and willingness to act in the interest of player safety.”
Looking ahead, the team involved in this incident will face age-appropriate disciplinary actions. The statement concluded with a reminder that, although this was the largest audience the young athletes had faced, the behavior displayed posed significant risks and could have resulted in serious injuries. Thankfully, no one was injured during the chaotic episode.
