In a striking revelation, the Stormers' director of rugby, John Dobson, has openly criticized the state of the pitch at Cape Town Stadium, highlighting how it has adversely affected his team, particularly following their recent narrow victory over the Bulls. This issue takes on a serious tone as Dobson disclosed that star player Adré Smith will be unavailable for their upcoming Champions Cup match against Harlequins due to an infected knee injury he attributes to the poor quality of the playing surface.
"Adré is out of action because he sustained a significant injury last week on that very pitch, which has caused us considerable frustration," Dobson stated during a press conference leading up to the match. He did not shy away from being blunt about the situation: "He suffered a split in his knee and subsequently developed an infection due to areas on the field that were inadequately covered with grass. The medical team has directly linked this to the pitch's condition."
Smith is not alone in facing health setbacks; Dobson noted that other players have also experienced minor injuries, adding that Smith was already dealing with a turf toe injury incurred during a match in Cardiff, often associated with artificial surfaces. Currently, Smith is hospitalized, a situation that brings no joy to the team as they prepare for a crucial game. "He has been hospitalized for two days already and is expected to stay for at least two more," Dobson lamented.
The Stormers currently lead their group in the Champions Cup with two victories, and despite the challenge of putting together a competitive squad to face Harlequins, the team remains optimistic as they head into the match. However, Dobson's worries about potential future injuries persist.
"We find ourselves in a dire situation, and I sincerely hope that Stormers Rugby takes decisive action regarding this matter. There are three critical aspects to consider: one is aesthetics, which we don’t really care about, but the other two are performance and player safety. If we invest heavily in our scrumming culture and yet players hesitate to engage fully for fear of slipping or losing grip, it undermines everything we work towards, as we witnessed in our game against the Lions," he emphasized.
Moreover, he raised serious concerns about player safety, pointing out that injuries related to artificial turf, such as grazes and abrasions, can lead to infections. He also highlighted the increased risk of concussions when players compete on poorly padded fields.
"I might be frank here, but our current state is not improving. We certainly do not have a world-class playing field, and I trust that Johan Ackermann and the Stormers organization will address this issue with stadium management," he added.
In a recent statement, Louw Visagie, the chief operating officer of Cape Town Stadium, claimed that the facility meets World Rugby standards and is suitable for use, a claim that Dobson evidently disputes.
In addition to Smith’s situation, the injury list for the Stormers continues to grow, including prop forward Ali Vermaak, who has ruptured his Achilles tendon, a severe setback for any rugby player. "It’s a significant injury for a player like Ali, regardless of their position. It’s very disappointing, given how effective he has been on the field," Dobson noted.
Ruan Ackermann is also dealing with an injury, having developed a bulging disc in his neck during a match where Dobson felt he performed exceptionally well defensively. "Louw Nel had a similar injury, and recovery times can vary widely from a few months to longer. The timeline for Ruan seems less optimistic, but we are hoping for the best, considering Louw managed to return in around nine weeks," Dobson clarified.
