The Rockies' Rotation: A Troubled Tale
The Colorado Rockies are on a mission to revamp their pitching rotation, and it's a mission that's long overdue. With a historically poor performance in 2025, the club's starters have left fans and management alike yearning for a change.
General Manager Josh Byrnes has laid out a plan to bring in veteran pitchers, aiming to stabilize the rotation and provide some much-needed bulk innings. "We're looking for guys who can not only pitch well but also have the experience to guide our team," Byrnes told MLB.com. "It's a delicate balance, but one we believe is essential for our success."
But here's where it gets controversial... The Rockies' home field, Coors Field, is notorious for being a hitter's paradise, making it a challenging environment for pitchers. This has led to a long-standing struggle for the club to attract top free agent pitchers.
The numbers don't lie: the Rockies' rotation ERA of 6.65 in 2025 was the highest of any club since 1913, when the stat became official. Even compared to previous Colorado teams, the stats were abysmal. And this is the part most people miss: the Rockies' rotation was further depleted when Germán Márquez became a free agent at the end of the season.
Currently, the club has a couple of experienced arms in Kyle Freeland and Ryan Feltner. Freeland, entering his tenth season, has an ERA hovering around 5.00 for three consecutive years, while Feltner's career ERA stands at 5.19. Antonio Senzatela, who was moved to the bullpen in August, is also under contract until 2026, but his 6.65 ERA last year suggests he might not be in the team's long-term plans.
Beyond these veterans, the Rockies' rotation options are thin on experience. Chase Dollander, once a top pitching prospect, posted a 6.52 ERA in his rookie season. Other young pitchers like Tanner Gordon, McCade Brown, Carson Palmquist, Gabriel Hughes, and Bradley Blalock have fewer than 110 big league innings pitched, with ERAs mostly above 7.00.
Given this context, adding veteran pitchers makes strategic sense. They could provide stability and allow the team to develop their younger talent at a more gradual pace.
However, the challenge lies in convincing free agent pitchers to sign with the Rockies. The club has only thrice signed a free agent pitcher to an eight-figure average annual value deal since 2006. Byrnes remains optimistic, hinting at the possibility of attracting pitchers on shorter deals who are up for the challenge of pitching in Colorado.
"There are guys out there who want to prove themselves, and we're confident we can provide the right environment for them to succeed," Byrnes said. "Our pitching group is committed to finding solutions, and we believe we can turn this around."
While the Rockies might not be targeting the top free agents like Framber Valdez, Ranger Suárez, or Zac Gallen, veterans like Wade Miley, Miles Mikolas, Alex Cobb, Jose Quintana, Patrick Corbin, and Martín Pérez could be potential fits. These pitchers, all aged 35 and above, are likely seeking one-year deals in free agency.
The Rockies could also explore trade options, but their limited trade value might restrict their options. Acquiring starters via trade could involve taking on undesirable contracts, a risky move during their rebuilding phase.
The Rockies' journey to rebuild their rotation is a challenging one, but with the right strategy and a bit of luck, they might just turn things around. Will they succeed? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: the Rockies are determined to write a new chapter in their pitching story.
