Are you tired of mysteriously losing mobile data? You're not alone, but the reason might surprise you. The Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) has a bold claim: those long-standing complaints about vanishing data aren't their fault. Instead, they point the finger at how you use your phone. But here's where it gets controversial... MTC's managing director, Licky Erastus, insists their investigations show most data loss stems from customer habits, not billing errors.
Erastus told Observer Money that while complaints have persisted for years, MTC's tracking tools reveal usage patterns, not billing discrepancies. He emphasizes the need for customer education, stating, “We can pinpoint where data is used, but educating users is key.” Interestingly, Erastus claims customers are satisfied once MTC provides detailed feedback.
Tim Ekandjo, MTC’s chief brand officer, acknowledges the infamous “chow my data” issue has been a persistent problem. To address this, MTC plans to launch educational campaigns explaining how devices and apps consume data. And this is the part most people miss... They’re even partnering with phone giants like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei to clarify how their devices operate. These campaigns will teach users to disable background apps and safeguard their data.
According to the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia’s (CRAN) 2024 report, 13 complaints were filed against telecom licensees, with MTC receiving eight and Telecom Namibia five. As of January 31, 2024, 10 complaints were resolved, leaving three unresolved—a 70% resolution rate, unchanged from 2023. Of the resolved cases, six involved MTC customers, while four were from Telecom Namibia.
Breaking it down further, MTC faced three billing complaints, three SIM registration issues, one service delivery problem, and one quality of service concern. Telecom Namibia, on the other hand, received four billing complaints and one quality of service issue.
Here’s the real question: Is MTC shifting blame, or do users genuinely need more education on data usage? While MTC’s efforts to educate customers are commendable, the persistence of complaints raises eyebrows. Could there be more to the story? We’d love to hear your thoughts—do you think MTC is addressing the root cause, or is there more they could do? Let’s spark a conversation in the comments!
