In a surprising move that has stirred the hockey community, the New Jersey Devils have traded veteran winger Ondrej Palat, along with a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick, to the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Maxim Tsyplakov. This trade was officially announced by both teams on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in roster dynamics.
Palat, who is now 34 years old, had been the subject of trade speculation for quite some time, and the Devils ultimately found a trading partner in the Islanders. Notably, he was held out of a recent home game against the Winnipeg Jets due to what was described as roster-management issues. Observers noted his departure from Prudential Center prior to the warmup skate, indicating a potential trade was imminent.
By making this deal, the Devils successfully alleviate Palat’s hefty $6 million salary cap hit, which extends through next season. Palat joined New Jersey on a five-year, $30 million contract after a successful decade with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he celebrated two Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021.
In this particular trade, there is no salary retention from either team involved. Furthermore, Palat possesses a no-movement clause and a 10-team trade list, which means he cannot be placed on waivers without his consent.
The Islanders, fresh off acquiring Carson Soucy from the New York Rangers just a day earlier, continued their trend of improving their roster by bringing in Palat. His $6 million cap hit will remain consistent over the next two seasons, adding financial considerations to the Islanders' strategy.
As part of the trade, the Islanders received not only Palat but also the previously mentioned draft picks, while the Devils welcomed Tsyplakov into their lineup. Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche, having previously worked in Tampa Bay’s front office during Palat's championship years, understands the value Palat brings. During his tenure with the Lightning, Palat consistently scored over 40 points in seven different seasons, including an impressive 63-point campaign in the 2014-15 season. However, since joining the Devils, Palat’s offensive output has dwindled; he managed only 31 points in any single season and has recorded just four goals and ten points so far this year. Despite this decline, defensive metrics indicate he still has a positive rating (plus-0.6), though his offensive performance has been rated negatively (minus-4.8).
For Islanders head coach Patrick Roy, Palat represents a trustworthy presence in the lineup, and Darche cleverly acquired a third-round pick, offsetting the cost of bringing in Soucy. The hope within the Islanders organization is that a change in environment will rejuvenate Palat's performance. Even if his statistics don’t improve dramatically, his leadership and extensive experience could greatly benefit the team's atmosphere.
On the other side of the deal, Maxim Tsyplakov is contracted through the 2026-27 season at an annual salary of $2.25 million. While he presents a promising opportunity for the Devils, having scored 35 points in his debut North American season in 2024-25, his performance has significantly declined this current season, with only one goal and one assist in 27 games.
