Design Meets Nature: Matteo Thun & Florim Transform Mount Etna's Lava Into Stunning Wall Art (2026)

Italy's Mount Etna, a fiery muse for artists and scientists, has found an unexpected new role. But can volcanic stone and glass become a stylish, sustainable wall covering?

Matteo Thun & Partners, in collaboration with Florim, have crafted SensiEtna, a collection that brings the essence of Etna into our homes. This innovative design duo has created a unique surface material that is as captivating as it is environmentally conscious.

The collection primarily utilizes recycled lava slab offcuts, a circular approach that reduces waste. By partnering with Nerosicilia, experts in volcanic stone, the designers reveal the hidden beauty of Etna's minerals. The process exposes iron, silica, and crystallized elements, creating a geological masterpiece.

And here's where it gets intriguing: they've added a modern twist by incorporating recovered monitor glass. This fusion of lava and glass showcases a customizable color range, adding depth and a contemporary edge. The designers explain, 'Lava stone is ingrained in Sicilian life, and its chromatic shifts during eruptions are captivating.'

The palette is a journey through lava's lifecycle, from ivory's molten glow to charcoal's cooled rock. Punchy yellows and deep reds create a playful dance of light and shadow. The smaller formats further emphasize the commitment to waste reduction.

Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, retaining the stone's natural imperfections and crystalline surprises. The three finishes—Bugnoato, Crosta, and Rigatino—offer distinct textures, from sculptural reliefs to matte roughness and crisp lines.

SensiEtna transforms Etna's ruggedness into an elegant, modern material. It's a controversial blend of nature's drama and refined design, sparking debate on the balance between raw beauty and contemporary aesthetics. Are we ready to embrace such a bold, sustainable approach to interior design? Share your thoughts below!
