In a thrilling display of skill and teamwork, Derrick White shone brightly for the Boston Celtics, contributing 28 points to lead his team to a decisive 114-93 victory over the Houston Rockets. This game, which took place on Wednesday night, showcased White's impressive ability from beyond the arc, as he nailed six 3-pointers during the match.
Despite being without their star player Jaylen Brown, who was sidelined due to tightness in his left hamstring after playing in a back-to-back series, the Celtics managed to secure their fourth consecutive win. Brown’s absence could have been a significant setback, but White stepped up to fill the void, demonstrating his importance to the team's success.
The Rockets faced additional challenges when head coach Ime Udoka was ejected at the end of the third quarter due to a double technical foul, which stemmed from his heated exchanges with the referees. Adding to the Rockets' woes, Alperen Sengun was also thrown out midway through the fourth quarter after receiving two technicals for vocally expressing his frustration over a no-call.
The game shifted dramatically in the third quarter. Houston had briefly narrowed the gap to just four points following a 3-pointer from Amen Thompson. However, the Celtics quickly responded with an explosive 18-3 run, propelling them to a commanding lead of 67-48 with approximately seven minutes left in the quarter. During this pivotal stretch, the Celtics capitalized on their perimeter shooting, with White and Baylor Scheierman each hitting two 3-pointers.
Thompson did manage to score again for the Rockets, but the Celtics continued their momentum with a subsequent 10-1 run, increasing their advantage to 77-51 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. White was instrumental during this surge, scoring the initial eight points, showcasing his offensive prowess.
As the quarter drew to a close, Reed Sheppard was called for a loose ball foul, which led to Udoka receiving two quick technical fouls and subsequently being ejected from the game. The Celtics took full advantage of the situation, converting four free throws as a result, ending the third quarter with a solid 87-63 lead.
Kevin Durant led the Rockets with 15 points upon his return from an ankle sprain that had kept him out of the previous game. Meanwhile, Sengun, who had an outstanding performance earlier in the week with 39 points and 16 rebounds against Indiana, managed to contribute 13 points and nine rebounds in this matchup. Additionally, Neemias Queta made an impactful statement with a career-high 19 rebounds alongside his 10 points, while Luka Garza added 19 points to bolster the Celtics' victory.
Looking ahead, the Celtics will next host the Miami Heat on Friday, while the Rockets will prepare to face the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday.
