China's Clean Energy Revolution: A Global Game Changer
China is leading the charge in the clean energy revolution, and its ambitious plans are set to reshape the world's energy landscape. With a focus on green technologies, China aims to dominate the global market for electric vehicles (EVs), batteries, and solar power, accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future.
According to Li Lecheng, China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology, the country is committed to fostering a green transition in manufacturing. This commitment is unwavering, even as some nations waver on their climate pledges. Li emphasizes that China will support its new energy vehicle (NEV), battery, and photovoltaic industries to expand globally, investing in green energy projects beyond its borders.
But here's where it gets controversial... China's dominance in clean technology manufacturing, controlling over 70% of global capacity in key segments, has sparked geopolitical tensions. Western markets, particularly the EU and the US, have raised concerns over massive state subsidies that allow Chinese companies to undercut local manufacturers.
The European Commission has imposed tariffs on Chinese EV imports, while the US maintains high tariffs and proposes prohibiting Chinese hardware and software in connected vehicles, citing national security.
And this is the part most people miss... China's aggressive expansion has made renewable energy solutions more affordable and accessible globally, especially for emerging economies. Solar panel prices have plummeted, thanks to the scale and efficiency of Chinese manufacturing. This has facilitated a faster adoption of wind and solar power in developing nations, offering a path to economic growth and emissions reduction.
In the first seven months of 2025, China's exports of electric vehicles, solar panels, and batteries surged to over $120 billion. This surge has driven a global shift, with 92.5% of newly installed power capacity worldwide in 2024 coming from renewable sources.
However, the true challenge lies in integrating this massive amount of fluctuating power into the world's largest electricity system. China's immense domestic climate goals, announced as part of its updated NDCs, aim to expand wind and solar power capacity to approximately 3,600 GW by 2035. This ambitious target, more than six times the 2020 level, requires installing new capacity at a rapid pace.
Experts highlight the need for major upgrades to grid integration, energy storage, and power market mechanisms to ensure reliability. China's stated intention is to promote international cooperation in green infrastructure and strategically deploy future-oriented industries, including hydrogen energy and CCUS, to maintain its global influence in the clean energy sector.
