For quick, factual answers, AI co-pilots are great. But if you're aiming for deep, generalizable knowledge, relying solely on LLM summaries might not be the best strategy.

The Future of AI-Assisted Learning

As we continue our research, we're exploring ways to make LLM learning more active. In one experiment, we tested a specialized GPT model that provided real-time web links alongside its responses. However, participants still preferred the ease of the LLM summary over digging into original sources.

Our future studies will focus on generative AI tools that introduce 'healthy frictions' for learning. We aim to identify guardrails or speed bumps that motivate users to actively explore beyond easy, synthesized answers. This approach is particularly crucial in education, where students need to develop foundational skills while preparing for an AI-integrated future.
