Imagine a city renowned for its political finesse, now trapped in a record-breaking standstill. Brussels, the heart of the European Union, has shockingly gone 542 days without a functioning government. This isn't just a blip; it's a crisis that's casting a long shadow over the city's future.
The Brussels-Capital Region, home to 1.25 million people, has been in political limbo since the June 2024 elections. This surpasses even the national record of 541 days set in 2010-11, a period that made global headlines. While Brussels won't enter the Guinness World Records, which only recognizes sovereign states, the situation remains dire.
This unhappy milestone was reached on Tuesday, according to most Dutch-language media, although some Francophone outlets have a different count. Regardless, a swift resolution seems unlikely. The 14 parties that secured seats in the 89-seat parliament are locked in bitter disagreements, sometimes descending into personal attacks.
This gridlock has paralyzed the self-proclaimed capital of Europe, which hosts both EU institutions and NATO. The consequences are mounting: a growing budget crisis, escalating drug-related violence, and a surge in homelessness, all while city authorities struggle to manage the influx of irregular migrants.
An open letter signed by nearly 200 influential figures – including academics, business leaders, and cultural figures – lamented the "unprecedented institutional void and funding crisis." The letter, published in major Belgian newspapers, warns that "political inaction is now affecting our daily lives" and that the "immense challenges that Brussels needs to tackle… can no longer wait." The signatories are urging Brussels leaders to convene and forge a path forward.
Adding to the public's frustration, approximately 500 Brussels residents protested the political stalemate, booing politicians and displaying signs of disapproval.
The core of the issue lies in the election results. The tax-cutting liberal Mouvement Réformateur emerged as the dominant force among French speakers, while the Flemish Groen (Greens) led the Dutch-speaking vote. Further complicating matters is the fixed quota of ministerial posts allocated to each language group, designed to protect the interests of Dutch speakers, who are a minority in the bilingual capital.
The francophone Socialists have firmly rejected a coalition with the Flemish nationalists (NVA), accusing them of being "anti-Brussels, anti-diversity." Conversely, the Flemish liberal party (Open VLD) refuses to join a Brussels government without the NVA, while criticizing the Socialists.
But here's where it gets controversial... The local newspaper Bruzz predicts the region's deficit will balloon to €1.6 billion by the end of the year, and a major bank has withdrawn a €500 million credit line. A caretaker administration is in place, but it's powerless to make new spending decisions. This is causing social support organizations to warn of potential salary cuts, halting major construction projects, and freezing investments.
The director of Kanal, a planned contemporary art museum, has stated that the lack of budget decisions could halt construction, jeopardizing the project's future.
And this is the part most people miss... Few expect a quick resolution. As De Standaard's political editor, Jan-Frederik Abbeloos, wrote, "In the Brussels region so much is happening and yet nothing at all."
