In the ongoing battle against rising antisemitism on university campuses, Melbourne University's interim vice-chancellor, Glyn Davis, has taken a strong stance against the spread of hateful sentiment. His testimony before the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has shed light on the challenges faced by Australian universities in addressing this issue. While Davis acknowledged the importance of free speech and protest, he made it clear that certain actions cross a line and should be condemned. The key issue at hand is the conflation of Jewish identity with the actions of a nation state, which Davis found particularly distressing. This raises a deeper question: how can we ensure that protest and free speech do not become vehicles for promoting antisemitism? The answer lies in a delicate balance between protecting free speech and preventing the spread of hate. As Davis pointed out, the university had moved to ensure posters were authorized and unauthorized posters and graffiti were removed quickly from campus. However, the challenge remains in identifying and addressing the root causes of antisemitism, such as the conflation of Jewish identity with the actions of a nation state. In my opinion, the key to addressing this issue lies in fostering a culture of understanding and respect for all cultures and religions. This requires a multi-faceted approach that includes education, dialogue, and collaboration between universities, law enforcement, and the wider community. As Davis noted, the university could not force ID checks and could not answer whether people were asked for identification. This highlights the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing antisemitism, one that goes beyond simply removing posters and graffiti. In conclusion, the battle against antisemitism on university campuses is far from over. As Davis' testimony has shown, the challenge lies in striking a balance between protecting free speech and preventing the spread of hate. It is up to all of us to work together to create a more inclusive and respectful society, where everyone can live and learn without fear of discrimination or violence. Personally, I think that the federal government's intervention into university governance, including the requirement for universities to adopt a formal definition of antisemitism, is a step in the right direction. However, it is not enough on its own. We need to continue to engage in dialogue and collaboration with universities, law enforcement, and the wider community to create a more inclusive and respectful society.
